In the first part of our interview, Darren Levine explained what makes Krav Maga so effective — it’s designed for everybody and it’s based on real life. Now, we continue talking with Darren about everything from the legal issues surrounding Krav Maga, what he considers the most important principles of the system, and, of course, his very special relationship with Imi.
The popularity of Krav Maga in the U.S. today is largely due to Darren Levine, who Imi entrusted to plant the seeds stateside. Not only did he plant the seeds, Darren grew Krav Maga into a national, and eventually global, system by founding the renowned Krav Maga Worldwide, which today has more than 150 locations worldwide.
When one thinks of martial arts movies, the immediate image that comes to mind is probably Bruce Lee performing a flying kick and yelling, “Keeyah!” into the camera. Badass? Yes. Practical? Not much. That’s why the more realistic action movies use krav maga in its storytelling and fight choreography.
Krav Maga has been a constant in my life for more than a decade. Through heartbreak, career changes, a new baby, death in my family, and all the usual highs and lows every human on this planet experiences. And I’m not saying I’ve done it perfectly every time, but I am here to tell you that when I show up and give it my all, it benefits me. And it’s worth it.
